Roost Use and Movements of Northern Long-Eared Bats in a Southeast Nebraska Agricultural Landscape

چکیده

Bats are important bio-indicators of ecosystem health and provide a number services. White-nose Syndrome habitat loss have led to the decline many bat species in eastern North America, including federally threatened northern long-eared bat, Myotis septentrionalis. was only recently found Nebraska, which lies on western extent this geographic range. To better understand how forest-dependent persists an agriculturally dominated landscape amid growing pressures, we investigated roosting habits at Homestead National Monument located southeast Nebraska. We mist-netted bats eight nights 2019 (16 August–26 August) caught 55 across five species, juvenile bats. unique roosts between two radio-tracked bats; most female were anthropogenic structures tree cavities within 0.23 km capture, while male snags as far 2.73 from capture site. Fence also used by other undocumented recorded three radio-tagged that commuted sites hours after sunset. Our results evidence distributional edge for wooded areas, riparian zones, human-built intensively managed agricultural imperiled species.

Roost selection by male and female northern long-eared bats in a pine-dominated landscape

We radiotracked 17 male northern long-eared bats (Myotis septentrionalis) to 43-day roosts and 23 females to 49-day roosts in the Ouachita Mountains of central Arkansas during summers 2000–2005. We compared characteristics of roost trees between males and females, and compared characteristics of sites surrounding roosts with random locations for each sex. Roosts were located in cavities, crevic...

Roost use by long-tailed bats in South Canterbury: examining predictions of roost-site selection in a highly fragmented landscape

We studied the roosting ecology of the long-tailed bat (Chalinolobus tuberculatus) during the springautumn months from 1998–2002 at Hanging Rock in the highly fragmented landscape of South Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand. We compared the structural characteristics and microclimates of roost sites used by communally and solitary roosting bats with those of randomly available sites, and roo...

Adaptive response to land-use history and roost selection by Rafinesque’s big-eared bats

Although habitat loss and degradation are major contributors to species declines, some species are able to adapt to changes in land use by selecting different habitats or structures in disturbed areas than they do in more pristine habitats. Bats are particularly vulnerable to changes in land use due to their dependence on specific habitat types and structures. The objective of this study was to...

Effects of Hierarchical Roost Removal on Northern Long-Eared Bat (Myotis septentrionalis) Maternity Colonies

Forest roosting bats use a variety of ephemeral roosts such as snags and declining live trees. Although conservation of summer maternity habitat is considered critical for forest-roosting bats, bat response to roost loss still is poorly understood. To address this, we monitored 3 northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis) maternity colonies on Fort Knox Military Reservation, Kentucky, USA...

Current status of the Northern Long-eared Myotis (<i>Myotis septentrionalis</i>) in northwestern Nebraska

The Northern Long-eared Myotis (Myotis septentrionalis; Order: Chiroptera) occurs in eastern, southern, and northern Nebraska, but its current distribution in northwestern parts of the state is unclear due to its recent arrival to the region. We investigated the status of this species in the Pine Ridge via mist net (2011-2014) and acoustic surveys (2014). We documented nine species of bats in t...
